Bringing Smiles and Comfort: How Pets Helping People Made a Difference at Summer Scholars 2024
This year at Summer Scholars, we had the pleasure of partnering with an incredible organization called Pets Helping People, and the impact they had on our students was truly heartwarming. For two hours, our campers got to experience the joy and therapeutic benefits of interacting with therapy dogs, and the experience was unforgettable for everyone involved.
A Visit to Remember
The moment the team from Pets Helping People walked into the green gym with their five or six furry friends, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation. The organization’s mission is simple yet powerful: to improve the lives of others through animal-assisted therapy, to employ best practices in training and supporting pet-handler teams, and to educate the community about the benefits of the human-animal bond.
They set up different stations around the gym, where our kids could walk, pet, and play with the dogs. Whether it was tossing a ball for a game of fetch or simply spending time cuddling and talking to the dogs, each activity was designed to foster connection and joy. For our K5 through fourth-grade campers, this was a dream come true—they couldn’t get enough of the dogs and wanted to spend the entire day with them.
The Power of the Human-Animal Bond
It was amazing to see how quickly the kids connected with the dogs. They played, hugged, and even talked to them as if they were old friends. The dogs seemed to bring out the best in every child, offering a sense of calm and companionship that was both beautiful and therapeutic. Our students discovered that dogs are more than just pets—they can be friends, confidants, and sources of comfort in times of need.
Many of the kids left the session talking about how much they wanted a dog of their own, recognizing how having a pet could help them feel less alone and provide support for their mental health. One camper mentioned that having a dog would be like having a friend to hang out with when their parents were busy. It was clear that the experience had made a lasting impression.
Creating Moments of Joy and Connection
The sight of our campers’ faces lighting up as the dogs responded to them—fetching a ball, sitting on command, or simply curling up for a cuddle—was something I’ll never forget. Their excitement and joy were contagious, filling the gym with an energy that warmed the hearts of our staff and volunteers. Even the members of Pets Helping People were moved, expressing how amazing it was to see the children connecting with the dogs in such a positive way.
Looking Ahead
Overall, having Pets Helping People join us at camp was a truly special experience. The dogs brought so much joy and comfort to our kids, and we’re already looking forward to welcoming them back next year. This partnership reminded us all of the incredible power of the human-animal bond and how important it is to create spaces where our youth can experience unconditional love and support, even if it comes with four paws and a wagging tail.
Thank you, Pets Helping People, for making a difference in the lives of our campers. We can’t wait to see you again next summer!
