Summer Scholars 2024: Empowering Milwaukee’s Youth Through Learning and Fun
This year’s Summer Scholars camp was an unforgettable experience for 200 inner-city students who joined us for a 5-week adventure filled with learning, exploration, and fun. At Jacarrie Kicks For Kids, our mission has always been to provide a safe haven for children, and this summer, we took it to the next level by creating an enriching environment where kids could grow, learn, and discover their potential.
A Camp Like No Other
Every morning, our campers arrived energized and ready to kick off their day. We began with interactive activities to get their minds engaged, followed by a hot breakfast to fuel them up. After breakfast, they were treated to a series of guest speakers who shared insights into their careers and life journeys. We were honored to host a diverse group of speakers, including Derek Rogers from the Bradley Foundation, realtor Gary Cheney, and NBA player Jordan Poole from the Washington Wizards. Their stories inspired our young scholars and demonstrated the different paths one can take to achieve success.
Engaging Activities and Unforgettable Experiences
Afternoons were reserved for a variety of exciting activities that catered to the interests and talents of all our students. From basketball and football to art, baking, and American Sign Language, there was something for everyone. One of the most memorable experiences was our partnership with "Pets with Friends," a local organization that brought therapy dogs to camp. The kids were overjoyed to spend time with these friendly animals, learning about the therapeutic benefits of interacting with dogs and how they can help with mental health and anxiety.
Wednesdays were dedicated to all-day field trips, providing our students with opportunities to explore new environments and build lasting memories. We visited places like Bay Beach, Sky Zone, the Milwaukee Zoo, and the museum. These trips were not only fun but also served as a chance for the kids to bond and learn outside the classroom.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
While having fun was a big part of our camp, we also focused on preventing the summer learning slide by incorporating educational sessions into our daily schedule. Every day from 10:00 to 12:00, our campers participated in classes that strengthened their skills in math, reading, and writing. This year, we added a cultural component, allowing students to learn more about their heritage and the rich history of their communities.
A Strong Finish
We concluded our camp with a back-to-school shoe giveaway, ensuring that each of our students started the new school year on the right foot—literally! We distributed 500 pairs of shoes, 400 book bags filled with supplies, and offered free haircuts and hairdos to make sure our kids were fully prepared and confident as they returned to school.
The impact of the camp was evident in the enthusiasm and growth we saw in each child. Our camp wasn’t just about keeping kids busy during the summer; it was about equipping them with the tools and support they need to thrive in school and beyond. The demand for next year’s camp is already high, with a waiting list of 200 kids eager to join us.
Looking Ahead
We are immensely proud of what we achieved this summer and grateful to everyone who contributed to making this camp a success—from our dedicated staff and volunteers to our inspiring guest speakers and generous donors. We’re already looking forward to next year and expanding our program to reach even more children.
The future is bright for our Summer Scholars, and we can’t wait to continue empowering the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.
Thank you for being a part of our journey!
